Research Goals

The “Visceral Novel Reader” project (DFG #422574378) has three overarching objectives:

  1. Exploring and establishing the potency of the “visceral novel reader” as a model for embodied novel reading in literary and cultural studies.
  2. Tracing the diachronic development of embodied novel reading in the British novel from the late seventeenth until the early twentieth centuries by means of case studies.
  3. Integrating the lived body into the phenomenology of reading in order to deepen our understanding of emotional and affective responses as a mode of comprehension.
